Christian Vogel - La Isla Piscola Remixes (Novamute)
Yet another cut from Mr. Vogel’s new album ‘Rescate 137’, but this time with remixes from Matthew Herbert and himself as well. The original is also included, and after one listen (if you make it all the way to the end) you will see why remixes are necessary. Messy composition and in general over-noodled, the original version is almost unlistenable but no doubt ‘abstract’. I think Mr. Vogel may be suffering from Cranium Rectum Inversion Syndrome, but do not fear Matthew Herbert is at hand to illustrate the art of being abstract AND danceable at the same time. Herbert retains all the original vocal snippets and element and arranges them in such a way that is unexpectedly groovy and quirky. Bizarre almost circus melodies and bass-lines wobble all over the place, but manage (fuck knows how) to maintain direction and perspective. Rather surprisingly Mr. Vogel’s remix (‘For the Travelling Fish Lover Version’) is actually quite good as well. Once again all the elements of the original are retained, but the whole track is tidied up and a little structure added. Funky abstract Jazz-styled grooves seem to emerge from nowhere, and the Moog/organ lines sound sublimely moody over the this time more defined kick-drum. The sounds and (live recorded?) percussion are all arranged very intricately, and take some interesting twists and turns throughout the track.
