Baby Anne - Dark Side of the Boom      (Pandisc)

One look at the front cover of this CD and you would be forgiven for thinking that what lies inside is yet another version of the ‘Euro Trance XX’ formula - but you couldn’t be further from the truth. Bad graphics (and titles) aside, it’s all about the music, and what lies here is a peculiar, yet refreshing 66-minutes of simply mixed Old School, Ravey, US Electro (and absolutely no cheap Paul Oakenfold imitations what so ever). Think ‘The Prodigy Experience’ produced by Andrew Weatherall and you might get a better picture of what I am trying to describe. There are twelve tracks in total, ranging from purer Electro moments such as Jackal & Hyde’s ‘Beyond’, to far ravier dispositions such as Chris Gallagher’s ‘Rippin up Wax’. Ms. Baby Anne also adds a couple of her own productions that are very raw, melodically driven, and sit nicely between all the other music here, which also includes some rather long ecstasy-motivated breakdowns and dodgy acid lines. Definitely NOT for the Electro purists out there, but essential for all you post-modern, neo-rave purveyors (all fans of Rephlex’s Braindance – you know who you are!).
