Carl A. Finlow - Electrilogy: Part 1       (Device)

Second release on this new electronic imprint from the UK sees Carl Finlow (aka Silicon Scally, amongst others) doing three more tracks of his trademark deep/retro electro thing. All very well, but none of the tunes featured here really show any kind of development – and if you’re familiar with some of his previous outstanding work on Scsi-av, Klang etc., then you can really do without this. Having said that, if you’re new to his music, then it’s worthy of a listen. Of all the cuts, ‘Hardwired’ is probably the best, with some excellent squelchy noises atop a sparse, cutting rhythm (also featuring some good subtle vocoder action). The main track, ‘Definition’, is a severe case for litigation on behalf of just about every 80’s electro/pop outfit around – call it retro if you like, but to me it just sounds old. Carl is one of the finest electro producers around today, but this is far from his best work…
