Fabrice Lig - Gualapagos      (RayGun)

Our favourite Belgian wunderkind returns to this excellent offshoot of Oliver Kapp’s Indulge label to lay down four outstanding tracks of soulful electronics. With his fourth release for Raygun, Fabrice shows off his Detroit influences more than ever, each track being crafted in the highest quality, drawing transparent influences from the likes of Carl Craig, UR, John Tejada et al.. The title track is first – a bleepy, jazzy piece much in the style of early 69 material, this rolls along beautifully, a sweet analog pad constantly setting the scene for strange riffs and underwater blips. ‘From the North’ drops the pace next, a downtempo drum loop set well in the background whilst thick chords and distant tones play on top – short but sweet. Next up, ‘Last Judgement’ provides my favourite moment, a driving hi-tech funk workout, featuring dynamic synth stabs and tough percussion pushing along a pitched up pad groove and more bleepy jazz licks, all done with exceptional style. Finally, ‘Fortitude’ is a simpler Techno cut, with hard percussion, a slightly twisted, acidic high line, and periodic deep organ snatches. All together another fantastic EP for those who like their Techno with soul.
